The act required Colonists to pay a new tax.  Starting in the Fall of 1765, legal documents and printed material must bear a tax stamp provided by commissioned distributors who would collect the tax in exchange for the stamp.The Colonists insisted the act was unconstitutional and mob violence ensued, thus the beginning of the Revolution.  In 1766 the English Parliament repealed the law.
